So, yeah, I got a tattoo.

Last night I went with Kirk to see Neil Gaiman read from his new book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane (which I’m only three chapters into so far, but I already love).

After the reading, Kirk and I went to get our books signed. We were told that we could get “two things signed: The Ocean at the End of the Lane and one other thing.” They were very clear about how the second item could be anything. So I said to Kirk, “I’m going to ask him to sign me, and then I’m going to get the signature tattooed on me.” I was half expecting Kirk to tell me that this was a terrible idea, worthy of a drunken girl at a Whitesnake concert, but he excitedly told me I should do it.

When I got to the front of the line, I handed Mr. Gaiman my book and then I blurted out, “Would you mind signing my wrist?” I think I must have come off as a new breed of spaz, but there was no avoiding that - I was talking to my hero for the first time.* Without a pause (he must get requests like this all the time) Mr. Gaiman took out his pen, took my arm and signed it with a flourish.

Kirk got his books signed right after me and we walked out of BAM beaming. Then we rushed into the East Village on the hunt for a tattoo parlor that was still open and not covered in bacteria. We were on a mission, and I was positively vibrating with joy.

After facebooking and calling lots of friends for suggestions, we ended up at Fun City on St. Mark’s Place. I showed the signature to my tattoo artist, Big Steve, and he went to work. I thought for sure getting the tattoo was going to be incredibly painful but it was just slightly painful, and over in ten minutes. And just like that, I was a tattooed lady.

I’m still kind of in shock about the whole thing. I keep looking down at the tattoo to check that it’s still there. It’s bigger than I had originally intended, but I wasn’t going to say to Neil Gaiman, “Oh, sorry, could you do that over?” It’s funny, though. When I was looking down at the signature after it was freshly done, I had the thought, “Oh, yes. This is my tattoo.” Like there was no question, like my body had been waiting for this to happen. I knew in that moment I had to do it.

All that said, I would probably have never had the nerve to go through with it if it hadn’t been for Kirk. He supported me through the whole thing and even held my hand when the needle was about to go in. I am very grateful I have such a supportive co-conspirator. I am even more grateful that I have a wonderful boyfriend (Kurt) who hates tattoos but loves me anyway.

So that’s it. My arm stings a bit and one of my co-workers has threatened me with a “new tattoo slap,” but I feel good. Thank you Mr. Gaiman, Amanda Palmer and Kirk for a wonderful night.

*I have gone to many readings and talks that Neil Gaiman has been a part of, but I have avoided getting anything signed by him in person. I was too afraid it would go badly.
